Kathmandu - Head Teacher (HT) of Bhuwaneswari Basic School of Indrawati Rural Municipality (RM), in Sindhupalchok, Ms Anjana Bhandari was beaten up by Khamsong Tamang, alias Ramesh, the Chairman of the School Management Committee (SMC), alleging that the date in  the letter calling for a meeting of the SMC was not correct, the news got priority with a photo of the injured eye of the HT.

The Nepal Teachers Federation Municipal Executive Committee has demanded action against the culprits for allegedly assaulting Principal Bhandari. According to the news, the HT has filed a complaint against the chairman to the police.

A Head Teacher plays an important role to improve schools in all fronts.. A school can operate smoothly and improvement can only be done with an understanding, mutual support, and coordination between the HT and the SMC. There are many examples of school improvement achieved by HT and SMC chair working together. The role of teachers' self-confidence is important in improving the quality of education. Conflicts can also occur when interests do not align. But the act of assaulting the HT cannot be appropriate in any way. If the HT has committed misconduct, there is a legal process to determine and take action. Anyone of SMC engaging in violence is never acceptable. The HT has dared to openly reveal the incident that happened to her and file a police report.

Also from an educational  perspective, this behavior is not agreeable  for SMC chair. Such behavior undermines the acceptability of the SMCs. When other stakeholders are not supporting SMCs, such incidents would sent a negative message about the need for SMC. If the SMC Federation is to be active and responsible, it should investigate the facts, apologize for the act of SMC chair, and condemn the actions of the chair.

Although teachers regularly attend schools in Himali RM of Bajura, students have stopped coming because of cold and they have gone to collect herbs, there was news. Most of the schools have been empty lately as some people go to collect herbs and others to shift the shed of their sheeps and goats to down (bensi), the news quoted.

The school opening and holiday calendar should be tailored to the local environment to manage such situations. During the herb-collecting season in Bajura's alpine meadows (patans) (that can give  main source of family income), it is natural for their immediate family needs to take priority. It is also important for students to learn about occupational traditional  knowledge. These kinds of  knowledge are not included in the curriculum. It would be good for schools  providing them with opportunities for learning through doing . Making news  that give a negative connotation to students who are not in school, without considering the opportunities to learn to recognize herbal medicine, collection skills, and sheepfold shifting skills, is a narrow understanding of the media.   Giving more importance to mere presence in the classroom without understanding the diverse learning opportunities is trivial.
